Mrs. Megan Henion and Ms. Shannon Perreault, co-Advisors of Pomperaug High School’s (PHS) National English Honor Society (NEHS), presided over a “Google Meet” ceremony on May 28, 2020, inducting several students into the school’s first Chapter of the NEHS. Students Taylor Addison, Boen Beavers, Hugh Flanagan, Tessa Flynn, and Reese Nguyen are the founding Executive Committee members who were instrumental in starting this organization at the high school.
The National English Honor Society’s motto is “gelast sceal mid are,” Old English for “duty goes with honor.” The motto proclaims and recognizes an obligation to use one’s talent in service to others. An integral part of the NEHS mission requires service to school, to peers, and to community. Students in this organization exhibit outstanding accomplishments in English and share a passion for literature, believing in the idea that literature and writing are an integral part of human experience. Reese Nguyen, an Executive Committee and founding member, reflecting on what literature has meant to her, spoke of its ability to allow you “to live a hundred lives.”
