Superintendent of Region 15 Schools Regina Lemerich Botsford has announced that three Pomperaug High School (PHS) students have qualified as National Merit Finalists.
Henry Hu, Andrew Kelbley, and Haley McClure were recognized for their significant accomplishment as National Merit Finalists at the Region 15 Board of Education meeting on March 27th, 2017. Excellent performance on PSAT and SAT assessments, outstanding academic records, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and recognized honors and awards are considered in National Merit Finalist awards.

Henry is in the Top 50 in the US National Chemistry Olympiad; he has worked with a team of 3 students, collecting and analyzing soil for NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission to measure soil moisture from space; he is a recognized AP Scholar with Honor (having earned a score of 3 or higher on 4 or more Advanced Placement examinations); he has served as captain of the PHS Boys Swim Team, earning All-State honors the past three years and has received the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) Scholar-Athlete award; he is president of the French Honor Society and technology editor of the Phoenix independent news magazine published at PHS.
Andrew plays the violin in the PHS orchestra, french horn in PHS band and he is first chair in the Connecticut Youth Symphony; he is a recognized AP Scholar with Honor (having earned a score of 3 or higher on 4 or more Advanced Placement examinations); he is Vice President of the French Honor Society and tutoring coordinator for the PHS chapter of the National Honor Society; he is a member of the PHS Boys swim team, having earned his varsity letter in 9th grade and is a lifeguard at the Heritage Hotel.
Haley is an Advanced Placement Scholar (having earned a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams); she is Team Captain on both the PHS Indoor Track and Outdoor Track teams; participates as a member of marching band, Link Crew, Mock Trial, and Harvard Model United Nations; she has completed over 100 volunteer services hours through membership in the Tri M Music Honor Society, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Science National Honor Society; she is a third degree black belt and a certified instructor in Tang Soo Do and enjoys scuba diving.
Over 1.6 million students across the United States apply for recognition as a National Merit Finalist. Henry, Andrew, and Haley are now being considered for college scholarship awards, as based on their excellent PSAT and SAT scores, outstanding academic records, letters of recommendations, and personal essay.
