 2016/17 School Year Calendar

At the Board of Education meeting on January 11, 2016, the 2016-2017 single year calendar was approved.  The 2016-17 school year marks the first year that the school district is required by the State of Connecticut to follow a regional calendar that is aligned with the calendar proposed by the district’s Regional Educational Service Center (RESC).  Education Connection is the RESC that services Region 15. There are six RESC’s in the state.

A district Calendar Committee of 24 members was developed with representatives from the Board of Education, administration, and teachers and parents from each school in the district. The committee was required to align Region 15’s calendar with the calendar proposed by Education Connection. Limited flexibility was given for school vacations, school start dates, and professional development.

Under consideration by the committee was the placement and use of five ‘flex’ days within the calendar. Flex days may be used to accommodate contractual obligations and/or to keep local school calendars consistent with past practice.  The use of those flex days is determined by individual school districts, and gives school districts some flexibility to determine when school will be or will not be in session, while maintaining 180 Instructional Days and 187 Staff Days.

The calendar committee made the following decisions regarding flex days:

-Two flex days were used for the Jewish holidays in October. The RESC calendar had school in session during these two holidays. Region 15 schools will not be in session October 3rd or October 12th.

-One of the flex days was used for a contractually obligated professional development day in June. There will be no school on June 5, 2017.

-The fourth flex day was used for Veteran’s day in November. The Education Connection calendar had Veteran’s day as a holiday but Region 15 has, for several years, gone to school on Veteran’s Day with special activities planned at each of our schools to honor our veterans. The committee decided to continue this tradition and use this 'fourth' flex day for schools to be in session on Veteran's Day.

-The fifth flex day is scheduled for October 11, 2016.  Schools will not be in session October 10th, 11th, and 12th.

RESC requirements for school calendars beyond 2016-17 are not yet available.
