PTO Newsletter - June 2008 News From Mr. Salutari

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:

June/July 2008

To Rochambeau parents/guardians:

As we are preparing for the many end of year activities and events, we are also preparing for the 2008-2009 school year.  Please see the details below for dates and times of each activity or event.  Report cards will be sent home with students on the last day of school.  For parents and guardians of students entering eighth grade, within your report card envelope will be your child’s math placement.  As you are aware, seventh grade students recently were assessed using the Computation Exam and Orleans Hannah Assessment.  These are two components of the criteria used to determine eighth grade math placement.  Your eighth grade child will either be placed in eighth grade math or algebra.  If you have any questions specific to your child’s math placement in eighth grade, please contact this year’s math teacher on Thursday, June 19th for more details.

At this point, the 2008-2009 master schedule is complete.  Student scheduling is on hold until the budget passes and the impact of the reductions at each building level are finalized.  Once the budget passes, I will begin scheduling students with the goal of mailing student schedules home during the first two weeks of August.  As you are aware, specific teacher requests from parents/guardians will not be accepted.  Feel free to provide any information specific to your child that you feel will help me schedule them most appropriately.  For your information, a group of teachers worked with administration since January focused on maximizing the quality of our faculty and created a master schedule for the 2008-2009 school year that is truly supportive of the middle school philosophy.

Mr. Bluestein and several faculty members joined together as a Literacy Committee focused on ways to improve the literacy instruction at Rochambeau in all classes.  One positive example of their efforts is our “Just Reading” time where students read something of their choice each day for approximately 25 minutes.  The Literacy Committee worked diligently creating Summer Reading Lists for all students.  Once the lists were completed, the Literacy Committee worked with our PTO and revamped our spring book fair.   As a result of the outstanding work by our Literacy Committee and our PTO, the book fair offered all books from our Summer Reading Lists.  In connection to our Literacy Committee’s focus, information regarding the Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge will be sent home with all students shortly.  Additionally, our expectation over the summer is all students attending Rochambeau next year should read and record the titles of at least three books.  Of course, reading more than three books would be wonderful.

I would like to thank students, staff, parents and community members for another great school year.

As usual, feel free to contact the middle school office over the summer via phone or email with any questions you may have.

Enjoy the summer months.

With regards,

Mr. Salutari
